These are examples of another type of nuclear medicine scan that uses a tracer that shows where glucose is metabolized, a PET scan. Glucose is normally metabolized by the heart and brain as well as by tumors, and the tracer is normally eliminated by the kidneys. So all of the scans on the left are normal. The top left images show data in the form of axial slices. On the bottom left is a fused image, showing PET data in color, aligned with CT data, called a 'PET-CT' scan. On the right is a PET scan acquired to show the whole body, with many areas of abnormal uptake in the right lung and mediastinum, from spread of lung cancer. Try to find the liver, spleen and kidneys, which are normal.
