ICM-II: ABDOMEN, case 3 |
||
This is a different patient who had a nuclear medicine scan, called a 'liver-spleen scan', which can also show abnormalities of these organs. For this study, a radioactive tracer is injected that homes in on the reticuloendothelial system of the liver and spleen. As you can see, these images are in 'inverted grey-scale', with high uptake shown in black on a white background. The images can also be shown on a dark background if the reader prefers. Three views of the liver and spleen are shown (which are normal). Nuclear medicine imaging is different from radiography in that each new view that is obtained does NOT result in increased dose for the patient.The tracer is already in their body and the image is formed when a detector is brought close to them to show the location of emitted radiation. So additional views can be obtained without increasing the patient dose. 'RAO' is a right anterior oblique view, and 'LAO' is a left anterior oblique view. |
