With the humerus in internal rotation, the lesser tubercle juts off medially, and the greater tubercle is projected over the humeral head.

With the humerus in external rotation, the greater tubercle juts off laterally, and the lesser tubercle is projected over the humeral head.

In neutral position, neither greater or lesser tubercle projects off the edge of the humeral head.
