Imaging of the breast
1. Initial imaging depends on age and complaint. For women under 30 with masses, ultrasound is most appropriate. For women over 30 with masses, mammogram followed by ultrasound is most appropriate.
2. US is best used for focal complaints rather than as a screening tool, and is excellent for determining whether a mass is cystic or solid.
3. Either US or mammography can be used to guide biopsies of breast lesions.
4. For a male with findings consistent with gynecomastia, no imaging is needed. If symptoms are not clear, mammography is the best initial study and ultrasound can be added if findings are not typical for gynecomastia on mammography.
