Summary: Reproductive imaging

1. Imaging of the ovaries is best done with US, particularly trans-vaginal scanning, which has the best spatial resolution and can detect fetal heart motion, indicating ectopic pregnancy if seen near the ovary.

2. Ectopic pregnancy must be presumed in any patient with elevated beta-HCG and no intrauterine gestation by US.

3. The uterus is best imaged initially with US, then with MR for complex cases, which shows more internal structure of the uterus than CT.

4. Imaging of the testis is best performed with US, to avoid radiation exposure to the gonads. Older nuclear medicine studies for torsion are no longer indicated.

5. US is extremely useful to determine whether a breast mass is cystic or solid, while mammography is best for characterization of masses and detection of calcifications.
