BENIGN BREAST DISORDERS:

Mastitis

Etiology: Local cellulitis caused by introduction of infant mouth flora: S. aureus (invasive/abscess formation) or S. epidermidis (diffuse mastitis)

Epidemiology: Affects 10-33% of breastfeeding women.

Diagnosis: h/o breastfeeding problems, ill-defined hypoechoic region on US, response to treatment w/antibiotics. Note: If no improvement w/abx, consider possible malignancy

Treatment: Antibiotics (dicloxacillin is DOC), warm/cold compress, continued breastfeeding/pumping
