BENIGN BREAST DISORDERS:
Abscess
Etiology: Usually related to breastfeeding, caused by keratin plug in duct
Diagnosis: History of mastitis, breast red/hot/painful, infant weaning or breastfeeding mother returning to work
Treatment: US-guided needle aspiration with intracavitary injection of antibiotics (91% cure rate); DOC: Nafcillin (lactating)/clindamycin (nonlactating); High rate of recurrence
Ultrasound features: Multiloculated hypoechoic collection; internal debris; echogenic/vascular rim; acoustic enhancement (fluid content)
