This is an MRI in this patient. The right implant is normal in appearance, but the left implant has varied internal signal, and there seems to be some high signal silicone outside the envelope of the implant, which can be seen as a thin black line around the implant on the left. This indicates that the implant has ruptured. Rupture can be enclosed by the fibrous capsule that typically forms around an implant over time. This is called 'intracapsular rupture', which is what this patient has. It is very difficult to detect with mammography and is better seen with either MRI or US. |
