This is a trans-abdominal scan of the uterus in the sagittal plane (note the label). For sagittal imaging, the head is always displayed to the left. There is a cystic area in the center of the uterus, suggestive of an early intrauterine pregnancy. No fetal parts were visualized at the time of this scan, but a scan several days later did confirm fetal heart activity. In a patient with a positive pregnancy test and abdominal pain, it is vital to determine whether the pregnancy is INTRAUTERINE in order to exclude ectopic pregnancy.
