Summary: Renal Imaging 1. Plain radiography is of limited utility in most renal abnormalities as it does not show small stones well and cannot visualize the kidneys 2. CT is the first-line of imaging for stones and masses of the kidneys, and imaging for stones should be done without IV contrast 3. MR can be used in followup of renal masses or as a problem solver for complex cases 4. Characterization of adrenal masses is one of the situations in which MR plays a primary role due to its ability to detect fat within adenomas 5. An understanding of embryological development of the kidneys is helpful in assessing the many developmental anomalies that can occur in this system. |
