Radiography in ENT imaging:
1. X-rays can show acute or chronic sinusitis, but this diagnosis is most often a clinical one, requiring no imaging.
2. Presence of an air-fluid level in a sinus indicates acute sinusitis while mucosal thickening without an air-fluid level indicates more chronic disease.
3. X-rays can also provide indirect information about the structures of the larynx and pharynx, particularly in the lateral projection by showing the outline of the air-filled structures, but are not very sensitive.
4. Most neck masses or atypical sinus disease require imaging with CT.
5. In children, if a palpable mass is present, initial imaging with ultrasound may be indicated.
