MRI in ENT imaging:
1. Most symptoms referable to cranial nerves should be initially evaluated with MRI, unless there is a contraindication.
2. Contraindications for MR, such as pacers, metal fragments, or other metallic devices should prompt evaluation with CT as an alternative.
3. The specific type of MR sequences to be performed will vary depending on the specific symptoms and likely site of disease.
4. Careful neurological exam is essential in planning appropriate imaging in suspected cranial nerve disorders.
5. Studies with and without gadolinium contrast are often performed and any history of renal disease is important to note, as this may be a contraindication for use of gadolinium.
