Summary: Neuro imaging 1. Grey matter is more dense on CT than white matter (because of more fatty myelin in white matter). 2. Fresh blood is more dense than brain tissue but generally less dense than calcification on CT. 3. Non-contrast CT is a sensitive way to detect fresh blood, but MR is most sensitive for detecting early stroke. 4. An understanding of the meningeal layers can help in identifying location and source of brain bleeding 5. Vascular territories of the cerebral branches from the circle of Willis are important to recognize, particularly in stroke, to correlate with symptoms. 6. Flowing blood in vessels on MR is usually dark but can be white on special sequences; clotted blood has a complex appearance on MR and changes over time. |
