MANAGEMENT of BREAST LUMP
Lumps in patients under the age of 30 are most often cysts or fibroadenomas, although cancer is still possible. Because most patients of this age have very dense breast tissue, mammography is not the initial exam of choice. Ultrasound is a good way to begin the evaluation, and if it shows a simple cyst, then no further workup is needed.
Solid masses that have benign features can be followed at six month intervals for 2 years to confirm their benign nature, almost always fibroadenomas. Features that suggest a benign diagnosis are smooth margins, oval shape, wider than tall orientation, and size under 5 cm.
