Unless there is a focal palpable mass, breast ultrasound is not necessary for the diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer. If performed, diffuse skin thickening can be demonstrated, but this is usually evident on physical examination and does not need ultrasound confirmation.

A-mammogram:

Mammography (shown to right) can show skin thickening and increased overall density of the breast in patients with inflammatory breast cancer. Diagnosis can most often be obtained with skin punch biopsy.

No, it would only be appropriate to consider excision of a fibroadenoma if it were extremely painful or large enough to be cosmetically an issue for the patient. There is no indication for removal of simple cysts unless they are very large and painful.
