MANAGEMENT of BREAST PAIN

Pain is a very uncommon presenting symptom for breast cancer unless it is very advanced (and usually palpable).

Most pain is functional and cyclic, related to hormones.

Most patients under the age of 30 require only reassurance for occasional pain, particularly if it is cyclic, diffuse, and if the physical exam is normal.

Focal pain, particularly in patients over the age of 30 or with strong risk factors for early breast cancer may require imaging, usually with mammography and ultrasound.
