BENIGN BREAST DISORDERS:

Complicated Cysts

Etiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation same as simple cysts except: Subsequent breast cancer risk up to 1%                                                                        

Imaging:

–     US: Simple cyst + homogenous low-level internal echoes (due to echogenic debris)

–     Mammogram: Like simple cysts: uniformly dense (discoid w/compression), round/ovoid shape, circumscribed margins

Management: Aspirate to confirm diagnosis or repeat imaging every 6 months x 2 years; Biopsy if increases in size or looks more like complex cyst on repeat imaging
