CT is NOT the primary way that breast implants are imaged, although it is useful to recognize them on CT when they are present, and CT shows pectoral muscles and attenuation of implants. Because of the relatively high radiation dose, CT is not recommended specifically for imaging implants. Each of the CT cases shown were done for other reasons, not for evaluation of implants.

Yellow-native breast tissue (stroma), which shows that the patient did not have a mastectomy. Implants were placed for augmentation. Aqua-latissimus dorsi muscle. Red-thoracodorsal artery (supplies latissimus dorsi). Green-pectoralis minor muscle. Magenta-pectoralis major muscle. This patient has retroglandular silicone implants, because the pectoralis major muscle is not draped over the front of the implants. You can tell these implants are silicone because they are similar in density to muscle, or slightly more dense. Attenuation measurement would be about 50-60 HU.
