'Ankylosis' is a word meaning fusion of a joint. 'Spondylitis' means inflammation of the spine. This is a condition where inflammation causes fusion of the spine over many segments. Because of this, the spine is no longer as flexible as normal. Relatively minor trauma can cause fractures. See if you can find any fractures on this set of CT images. |

This is the next study that was done in this patient, a CT reconstructed in the sagittal plane (approximately). Because this patient's spine is not straight, the plane was adjusted to be slightly off-sagittal so that it would line up better with the actual position of the spine. This patient has a condition called anklosing spondylitis. |
