CASE 4
This patient has congenital malrotation of the gut. Her small intestine is all on the right side of her body and her colon is all on the left. When the normal herniation and rotation of the gut happens in the embryo, things can go wrong, leaving the intestines in the wrong place. Patients with this type of malformation have abnormal attachments of the bowel to the back body wall and are more prone to developing volvulus or twisting, which can cut off the blood supply to the gut.
