The lungs in this patient are too LUCENT and too LARGE. The increased volume, called hyperinflation, can best be seen by looking at the shape of the diaphragms, particularly on the lateral view. As the air flow in the lungs is obstructed, the lungs increase in volume and push down on the diaphragms, making them flat. The lucent appearance of the lungs is most evident in the upper portion of the lungs.
