These are sagittal MR images. MR is very good for looking at both the spine and the adjacent cord and nervous structures. CT can be used if the only question relates to bony problems, but most often, since the bone is so close to the nerves, we are concerned about both.

This is a T1-weighted MR image in the midline, and the abnormal level is T10. To count out levels, you need to start at the top (C2).

This is a T2-weighted MR image (CSF is white), and there is an artifact running through the image (yellow).
