This ultrasound shows a markedly enlarged, hypervascular but homogeneous appearance of the thyroid gland suggestive of thyroiditis. The nuclear medicine study also shows a diffusely enlarged gland and quantification of uptake showed overall slight increase from normal. The pattern of thyroid function tests and imaging results in thyroiditis varies depending on the type of inflammation present and how long it has been going on. In general, at early stages there may be signs of excess thyroid hormone levels, but later patients generally become hypothyroid.
