CT in ENT imaging:
1. Most neck masses should be initially evaluated with CT in adults, and with ultrasound in children.
2. Pulsatile masses may indicate a vascular origin, and this symptom should be noted for planning the most appropriate imaging sequences to perform, including timing of contrast administration.
3. Any past history of cancer is also important to note, and PET/CT may be indicated instead of CT alone in cases with a known primary tumor.
4. MR can also be considered, but the speed of CT is very helpful in obtaining imaging of the larynx and pharynx without motion artifact from swallowing.
5. IV constrast is most often used for neck CT, to help in distinguishing nodes from vessels, so any prior history of contrast allergy or renal disease is important to note.
