In analyzing artificial valves on chest radiographs, it is important to look at the LOCATION of the valve as well as the ORIENTATION. The lateral view is often more helpful than the frontal view for analysis of valves. If you draw a diagnonal LINE across the approximate outline of the heart, the AORTIC and MITRAL valves will be central in location, with aortic above the line and mitral below. The TRICUSPID valve is more anterior in position and the PULMONIC valve is more posterior and superior in position. So this patient has replacement of the aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves.
