Integrated Problems Radiology: Abdominal Pain

Untitled2 Untitled2lab

What type of study is this? This is an abdominal CT, axial plane. The window used for display is a soft tissue window (because it is easy to tell fat from muscle). This is a great way to see abnormalities that involve the fat that surrounds all normal abdominal structures. The margin between fat and organs, muscles, and GI structures should be very sharp, and the walls of tubular parts of the GI tract should be very thin. How would you describe the abnormal findings? There is a bowel loop on the patient's right side that has a very thick wall (red), and the fat all around it is not as black as it should be (green), with an appearance of subtle streaks of grey called 'fat stranding'. There are also some rounded abnormalities (blue) that could be enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes.
