ICM-II: CHEST, case 3

coronalCT
cardiaclabax

This is the same CT data, reconstructed in the coronal plane. This reconstruction can be done after the patient has left the department, as it does not require extra scanning, just computer equipment and time. The expected course of a normal CVL is shown in blue and the approximate course of our patient's CVL is shown in red, too far to the left. You can tell that IV contrast was given because the aorta and heart chambers are whiter than the muscle of the myocardium.

This is an axial CT (BONE is white, particularly around the edges), displayed with a soft tissue window (MUSCLE and FAT are easy to tell apart), and with IV contrast (the aorta is much whiter than muscle). There is a normal amount of muscle relative to fat, about half and half. The normal position of a CVL should be in the SVC near the right edge of the mediastinum, and in our patient, the CVL in the aorta would be too far to the left, as seen on the CXR.
