A soft tissue window is not suitable for evaluation of the lungs. You need a lung window, as is shown on the right. It is the same data as the other image, just displayed with different brightness and contrast settings. There are many ill-defined high attenuation areas in both upper lobes most consistent with bilateral pneumonia. Note that you can still see muscles, but their attenuation is much more similar to the surrounding fat than on the soft tissue window. |
