The anterior scalene muscle attaches to the anterior tubercle of the C3-6 vertebral bodies, and the middle scalene attaches to the posterior tubercle of the C3-7 vertebral bodies. The vertebral artery (shown in red) passes through the foramen transversum. Also shown is the spinal cord with dorsal and ventral roots, and the dorsal root ganglion (dark green). The dural covering of the cord and nerves is shown in yellow.
